- Story Text: Within minutes of the arrival of Ratko Mladic at the Hague detention centre on Tuesday (May 31) a tribunal spokeswoman addressed the media to say the time had finally come for former Bosnian Serb military commander to stand trial over the 1995 over Sarajevo siege and the Srebrenica massacre.
. But it has been a long time coming said the spokeswoman, Nerma Jelacic.
"After almost 16 years of being on the run he is finally where we have wanted to see him for quite a while" she said.
Mladic was transferred by helicopter to the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) detention centre near The Hague early in the evening.
Mladic was indicted by the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia over the 43-month siege of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo and the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the town of Srebrenica during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
Hundreds of media and onlookers stood in front of the prison waiting for him but the ICTY staff made sure he was not visible to the media.
"It is certainly a big milestone for the tribunal, and we are very happy to receive him here and to be able to proceed with the trial,"said Jelacic.
Inside the prison complex, several guards wearing helmets and carrying automatic weapons patrolled the area as the first of two helicopters landed. A convoy of black cars also entered the grounds.
Jelenic said Mladic has been transferred to the detention unit and that he would not mix with other inmates before his trial day.
"Well first we have to go through tonight so he has to be settles into the detention unit, now he is actually right now being spoken to by different officials of the registry, he's being introduced to the rules and regulations, a copy of the indictment will be given to him, he will undergo a medical examination, he will be put into an isolated cell for the first few days of his inhabitance of the detention unit, and only after that will he introduced to one of the wings where the other detainees are," she said.
The ICTY said a panel of judges would now be appointed and Mladic would appear in court "without delay". Typically, that means 12 or 24 hours after a suspect's arrival, although Mladic's first court appearance is more likely to be on Thursday or Friday.
The court said Mladic's initial appearance would be announced in due course. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
