- Story Text: Mourners at the Virginia Tech Campus stood on the lawn in silence on Friday (April 20). They released balloons to remember the victims of the shooting.
In the U.S. Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid announced the remembrance.
"He's also asked people around the country - at 12 o'clock noon - to stand in a moment of silence in memory of the loved and lost at that terrible tragedy in Blacksburg, Virginia at Virginia Tech University. And as a memento to that, I and many other people around the country are wearing the colours of the Virginia Tech Hokies, and I'm proud to do that. And so in just a minute, Mr. President, we will stand in silence with the rest of the country in recognition of the tragedy in Virginia."
Virginia Congressman Rick Boucher asked the House to join the silence.
"As members may know, Governor Kaine of Virginia has asked that today be a national day of mourning for the students and the faculty members who lost their lives at Virginia Tech on Monday of this week. In observance of Governor Kaine's request, I ask that the House join our nation for a moment of silence at this time."
Monday's shooting was the deadliest campus shooting rampage in U.S. history.
The rampage took place in two separate areas, first at a dormitory as students had begun criss-crossing the sprawling campus for morning classes, and then about two hours later at an engineering and science hall a half-mile (0.8 km) away.
Virginia Tech, with 26,000 students and some 100 buildings on 2,600 acres (1,050 hectares), is located in the town of Blacksburg and set in lush rolling hills in the southwest corner of the state, about 240 miles (390 km) from Washington, DC. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
