- Story Text: Homework doesn't get in the way of Zefa's jam sessions with his uncles. The 11-year-old recently wowed Indonesian jazz fans with his captivating concert in Jakarta. "When I have homework, I finish them at school before coming home so that they will not disturb my time practising on the piano," said the sixth-grader prior to the concert on Friday (January 6). Despite only having learned jazz for two years, Zefa has become Indonesia's most promising jazz newcomer. Rising from a classical piano background since he was six, Zefa soon joined a jazz band whose musicians consisted of his very own uncles. "I love playing at jazz festivals and concerts. I've studied classical piano since I was six, but started to learn jazz since I was nine," said Zefa, a native of West Java's provincial capital Bandung whose favourite musicians included Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones and Beethoven among many others. Jazz fans around the country soon took notice of the band -- known now as 'Zefa&Uncles' -- and were especially taken by Zefa's talent on the keyboard. "I think he is very special, being only 11-year-old and can play jazz compositions, even at its basic was more complicated than other types of music. Being able to put himself among other more senior musicians also creates its own phenomenon," said one jazz enthusiast attending the concert. Zefa, whose full name is Zefanya Hartani Putra, has also won numerous awards, including Best Keyboardist at the Jazz Goes to Campus competition last year in Jakarta. He was also the youngest jazz musician to have participated at the Java Jazz Festival and the Bali Jazz Festival last year. The Indonesian Museum of Records has also put his name as the youngest musician to have held a solo classical and jazz piano concert in 2004.
