- Story Text: A U.S. citizen was pulled alive from the ruins from what once was Port-au-Prince's Hotel Montana on Friday (January 15).
The unidentified U.S. survivor had had his legs amputated so as to free him from the devastation and rubble.
A helicopter lifted him up and transported him away for further medical treatment.
The Hotel Montana, built in the mid 1940's, was a popular destination for international travellers visiting the Haitian capital.
International rescue workers scoured the remains of what once was a posh hotel hoping to find more survivors.
"We have found quite a few people alive and dead and we will continue to work until the work is done," said Chilean rescuer Juan David Orillana. "No stone will remain unturned."
Marshall Stone, a rescue worker from the state of Virginia in the United States said his team had been on the job for over two days.
"My team from Virginia and the U.S. was assigned to the Montana Hotel because they had gotten reports of live victims here," he said.
"We've rescued three people since we've been here."
The hotel was turned into a pile of rubble when a massive 7.0 earthquake struck.
The total death toll may be as high as one hundred and forty thousand people dead. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
