- Story Text: The deafening sound of the vuvuzela blasted through the tiny town of Schiedam, outside the Dutch city of Rotterdam on Saturday (July 10), the eve of the World Cup final.
It was a cry of support for the national team which the people of Schiedam hoped their players could hear all the way in South Africa.
About a hundred people got together in the town square to try and beat a record set by another Dutch town a couple of weeks ago.
But they couldn't manage to beat the record of 127.1 decibels which the town of Hoogezand Sappemeer set a couple of weeks ago.
But Schiedam still managed a respectably noisy 102.5 decibels.
Hoogezand Sappemeer had around 300 people to help pump up the volume to the same level as a jet engine.
Despite being outnumbered, local restaurant owner Conny Meinkers was still disappointed.
"The idea comes from an other record. Hoogezand established a record of 127.1dB and we thought it would be entertaining to file our own record just before the World Cup final which we, by the way, will obviously win. Unfortunately we didn't surpass their record and we have to admit that Hoogezand was better. Our own little record only reached 102.5 dB," she said.
The vuvuzela contest was another way for Schiedam's citizens to show how confident they are of a World Cup win for the Netherlands against Spain on Sunday (July 11).
The Netherlands have twice reached the World Cup final in 1974 and 1978, but fell respectively to Franz Beckenbauer's West Germany and an Argentina side fired by the goals of Mario Kempes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
