Spain and Italy's Prime Ministers Romano Prodi and Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero met in Rome on Thursday (December 20) to discuss with French President Nicolas Sarkozy the establishment of a community of Mediterranean nations.
The new Mediterranean Union is meant to handle problems such as immigration and terrorism.
"It was a long time we had planned to discuss this great project for the Mediterranean. Building a Mediterranean Union was a project already outlined but never enforced and defined because no one gave it a strong push," Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said at a press conference on Tuesday.
All three leaders agreed on the importance of cooperating with the European Union on the creation of this new subject.
"Spain is ready to commit to this project as a forefront country for all the initiatives that are related to the Mediterranean," Spanish Prime Minister Jorge Luis Zapatero said.
"The space defining the relationships among the Mediterranean countries is a source of enrichment, culture, trade, communication and civilization. We owe much to the Mediterranean," Zapatero also said.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced that the future of the Mediterranean Union will be discussed in a summit in Paris on July 13.
"The tree of us have decided that it is important to understand each other and be united among Mediterranean countries. We must turn our backs to hate, war and destruction," Sarkozy said.
"This is our vision because we believe that it is our responsibility as politicians and statesman to make of the Mediterranean what the Europeans dreamt for Europe sixty years ago," the French President also said.
