- Story Text: An army commander in Cairo warns protesters to stay indoors at night as demonstrators carry the body of a man through the streets.
An Egyptian army commander called on protesters in Cairo on Saturday (January 29) to remain in their homes at night and not risk breaking a curfew amid reports of looting, attacks and ransacking of public buildings during anti-government protests.
"We want only one thing from you. If you want to protest, protest and say what you want. Lead the change with your hands, but please stop rebelling at night," the un-named commander said to a crowd of protesters through a megaphone.
Earlier, a man was shot and killed by Egyptian forces near the Egyptian parliament.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators defied the curfew called for by the army and continued with mass protests in and around the cities of Cairo, Suez and Alexandria.
Protesters demonstrated near the parliament building in Cairo and carried the body of a dead man through the streets.
President Hosni Mubarak clung to power on Saturday, replacing his cabinet in an effort to appease angry Egyptians who demonstrated in their tens of thousands to demand an end to his 30-year rule.
Mubarak ordered troops and tanks into Cairo and other cities overnight and imposed a curfew in an attempt to quell protests that have shaken the Arab world's most populous nation, a key U.S. ally, to the core. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
