THERE HAVE BEEN SOME EXHIBITIONS OF SOME ASPECTS OF MODERN CHINESE ART. BUT ALSO THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A SYSTEMATIC EXPLORATION OF MODERN CHINESE ART IN A MAJOR MUSEUM IN THE WEST. - Story Text: One of the largest and most impressive exhibitions of Chinese art has opened in New York.Included are around 500 masterworks from China from 3000 B.C.to the modern era.
Unparalleled in scope, the Guggenheim Museum on Tuesday (February 10) unveiled its landmark exhibition presenting around 500 masterworks from the People's Republic of China The exhibition features artworks ranging in date from 3,000 B.C.to the modern era, including recent archaeological discoveries to large-scale stone Buddhist sculptures and rare 12th century landscape paintings.
Assembled from more than fifty lenders in seventeen provinces in China, many of these works have never been seen in the West.
"China: 5,000 Years" explores the themes of innovation and transformation during the great eras of Chinese art, and is the first major museum exhibition to unite traditional and modern Chinese art.
The show opens with the dramatic sight of the terracotta warriors, accompanied by a magnificent horse from an imperial tomb of the Qin Dynasty dated 221 B.C.
Jade and bronzes follow on to a magnificent array of porcelain vases and jars including one on loan from the Palace Museum in Beijing never seen in the West before.
The exhibition will remain on show at the Guggenheim until the end of May 1998.
