- Story Text: Thousands of people have been flocking to Geneva to
attend one of world's largest exhibition of Mexican
pre-Colombian art.Over four hundred works representing 3000
years of history are on display.
A major exhibition of Mexican pre-Colombian art has
opened this month at the Rath museum in Geneva.Over 450
people a day attended the event.
"Mexico: Land of Gods" is probably the largest show of
works covering 3,000 years before the Spanish conquest ever
assembled worldwide, acording to its organisers.
Among its 400 exhibits, on loan from other European
museums and private collectors, are works representing the
main Mexican Indian cultures -- Olmec, Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya
and Aztec -- and smaller groups like the Mezcala.
They include jaguar masks, engraved jade, Mixtec mosaics,
giant Aztec sculptures and artefacts illustrating daily life
of the pre-Colombian period.
During the exhibition, the museum is also running a course
for amateur philologists on the Mayan language and its glyphs
-- or picture-words.
The exhibition will be open until January 1999.
