- Story Text: U.S. soldiers have sealed off a part of al-Khadra
neighborhood 15 kms west of Baghdad and blocked a highway
after a landmine was discovered there. The highway is
frequently used by American troops.
U.S soldiers encircled on Friday (July 18) an area near
a highway where the landmine was planted. Demolition
experts managed to defuse the landmine. The expressway is
frequently used by U.S forces.
The incident occured the day after the anniversary of the
revolution that brought the Baath party to power.
Thirty-three U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since
President George W. Bush declared major combat over on May 1.
U.S. forces blame die-hard Saddam loyalists for the
attacks, but many ordinary Iraqis have expressed frustration
at the lack of progress towards self-government.
