- Story Text: About 2,000 people took part in a demonstration in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon on Thursday (2 September) to protest against homeless people being expelled from houses that they have been occupying in the city.
SYNOPSIS: A large contingent of police were on hand to guard the National Assembly building in Lisbon.
The demonstrators marched on the building after the government refused to stop the eviction of those people occupying houses illegally. The homes were seized during last year's left-wing revolution. Many were rich people's second or third homes bought as investments, but others were occupied while families were on long holidays. Some estimates show that about 150,000 people are occupying houses that do not belong to them.
Thursday's demonstration was a peaceful one, but earlier in the week two people were injured in a similar protest. Then police had to fire into the air to disperse about 200 demonstrators who were stoning the car of the Housing Minister, Eduardo Pereira. Meanwhile, President Antonio Ramalho Eanes has warned against any revival of extreme left-wing agitation. He said that would violate the elementary rights of citizens and would amount to economic sabotage.
