- Story Text: Thirty one Green parties from accross Europe meet in Rome
to found a new European Green Party
Members of Green parties across Europe met in Rome
on Friday (February 20) to launch the first ever European
Green Party in order to come to a more united strategy on green
issues.
It is a great event, because it is the first political
subject, the first party to transform itself from a
federation
to a single united party, for environment for democracy,
for peace and for human rights. It is above all the only
true
political entity ready for the new Europe, said Italian
Green Party member, Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio.
The twenty-five EU nations who will make up the new
group will unite under one banner, in the lead up to
European
Parliamentary elections in June 2004.
The new party will endorse traditional Green issues
such as sustainable development and a European-wide
transport network
that takes into account environmental factors, as well as
the battle against genetically modified foods and renewable
energy.
Organisers screened a special promotional film,
depicting social and environmental battles in the past, to
music
especially written for the new party by Italian film
composer Ennio Morricone.
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer also attended
the launch Germanys Green Party - the only green party
currently in
power and likely to have much influence in the new party.
"We all believe in human rights. We believe in the

same rights," said Fischer.

Fischer.
The congress will end on Sunday (February 22) when
delegates will sign the founding charter in the presence of
Rome's mayor, Walter Veltroni.
