My instructions are to stay for as long as is useful and to conduct the negotiations is a spirit of conciliation, moderation and goodwill. While I'm here, I shall be in the closest daily contact with the representatives from allied countries and the Government of the Republic of Vietnam. We shall consult frequently. The Ambassador to the peace talks, Ambassador Lam, has been courteous enough to come to the airport to greet me. I look forward to renewing the talks with special adviser Le Duc Tho, Minister Xuan Thuy and their colleagues. If our North Vietnamese interlocutors have come here in the same spirit, understanding and flexibility that has characterised our meeting in October, a rapid settlement of the war is probable".
