In general cats are animals that are very proud, sometimes a bit snobbish, at the same time very noble, but also very discreet. If he confided himself a little at the end of his life, Balthus preferred to show himself through his works of art." 1.55 6. SCU/CU: LE ROI DES CHATS (KING OF CATS), 1935 (2 SHOTS) 2.15 7. - Story Text: A long-lost painting by late French artist Balthus,
regarded as one of the finest realists of the 20th century,
has reappeared in a private collection. The painting, dated to
1930, is exhibited among some 115 major works of the French
painter at the Jenisch museum in Vevey, Switzerland.
The 1930 painting, "Joueuse de Diabolo", depicts a
girl in a dance-like pose playing a game. Balthus gave it to
his friend Emo Bardeleben who left Switzerland for New York in
1932.
Works by Balthus, who died last year at the age of 92, are
worth millions of dollars, but rarely come up at auction.
"It's a mythical work of art that we knew about. In a way
I had already seen it without really seeing it as we knew
about the six preliminary drawings of this Joueuse de
Diabolo,"
Domonique Radrizziani, curator of the Balthus retrospective
exhibition said.
The art world was unaware of the painting's whereabouts
and considered the work to be lost.
Born Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola of a Polish family
living in Paris, Balthus was a self-taught painter. He is best
known for his provocative, some said pornographic, paintings
of young women.
The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, showed the oil
painting recently to the museum's experts, who have included
it in a coming exhibition of 107 paintings and watercolours by
Balthus.
