- Story Text: Punching their arms into the air in a synchronised
one-two motion, nearly 47,000 Thais have taken part in a world
record aerobic workout in Bangkok.
Despite the pouring rain, 46,824 people turned up at
Sanam Luang on Saturday (November 23) to earn a place in the
"Guiness Book of World Records" as the largest group ever to
mass in one place and do aerobics for 61 minutes.
The event, kicked off by Prime Minister Thaksin
Shinawatra, was aimed at promoting healthy living.
Turnout was less than the 75,000 people expected, though
for a time Sanam Luang was jumping with people in yellow
t-shirts, a colour worn to honour the King of Thailand.
The park was divided into nine areas in which both university
students and residents crowded to take part in the 61 minute
workout.
They were ticketed on entering the grounds and required
to follow a set routine demonstrated on stage by professional
aerobic instructors from the Aerobics State Association.
More than 200 participants passed out in the afternoon
heat, and three were admitted to hospital with stomach pains.
Thaksin, huffing and puffing after 20 minutes of dancing,
announced that the world record had been broken to the cheers
of the crowd.
"Today we have 46,824 people, but anyway we broke the
record. We thought this may set the tone for the Thai people
to play an important part in the diet and exercise to prevent
the preventable disease, like diabetics, hypetension and all
heart disease," said Permanent Secretary of the Public Health
Ministry, Dr Vallop Thainua.
Mexico set the world record in 1999 when 36,000 people
gathered to dance for 60 minutes.
The world record bid will have to be evaluated by the Guiness Book of World Records organisation in the United Kingdom before the result can be officially announced.
