- Story Text: Hong Kong's skyline has burst into colour as it kicks
off Christmas celebrations in the territory.
Hong Kong began its official Christmas festivities on
Friday (December 15) with the opening of a fair dubbed the
"EuroChristmas."
Anson Chan, Hong Kong's Chief Secretary for
Administration, opened the fair with a symbolic switching-on
of thousands of Christmas lights.
Booths with European food and souvenirs dotted the fair
ground at the Hong Kong Convention Centre.
But the highlight is a children's theme park with dozens
of rides and what organisers say is real snow.
They claim it is the biggest public event held in the
territory and visitors would be able to experience a fantasy
European winter setting.
The event is designed to showcase Hong Kong as an
international city, boost trade links with Europe and promote
cultural exchange.
The event also aims to establish Hong Kong as Asia's
Christmas capital and to help raise visitor arrivals.
Singer Olivia Newton-John and Hong Kong's 'Cantopop' king,
Jacky Cheung sang Christmas songs with members of the Hong
Kong Children's Choir.
The fair runs until January 2.
