  • Story Text: Thoroughbred horses from around the world thunder
    over a frozen lake during the White Turf race in the jet-set
    resort of Saint Moritz, Switzerland.


    Top-class horses from around the world galloped
    across 40 cm of ice on the frozen lake of Saint Moritz on
    Sunday.

    Some 12,000 people gathered in the swiss resort to see
    daring jockeys compete in several races of Saint Moritz' White
    Turf Championship. Races included flat, trotting and
    skijoring.

    In the flat race over 1900 m, the 22-year old Swiss jockey
    Annina Widmer stole the limelight with the horse Desert Track.

    One of the highlights of the day was the skijoring race,
    in which eleven jockeys on skis were pulled by their horses
    accross 2,700m.

    Favourite skijoring racer Jacob Bruger of Switzerland did
    not have much luck as he fell just at the end of the first
    turn.

    But eventhough Adrien Von Gunten, also of Switzerland,
    overtook the favourite, Bruger still lead in the overall
    standings.

    The moment everyone was waiting for was the 2000m Grand Prix
    race with its prize of 111,111 Swiss francs -- the highest
    swiss prize paid for a single race. This year's big winner was
    German jockey Lennart Hammer-Hansen with Sixtino, who became
    the Champion of Snow 2001.

    Saint Moritz' White Turf races are held since 1907.
