- Story Text: Turkish troops took a tight grip on the devastated town of Lice on Monday (6 September) as rescue workers dragged more bodies from the rubble left by Saturday's earthquake and the death-toll estimates climbed to three thousand.
It's already known that at least 2,200 people were killed when the eastern area of turkey was hit by the earthquake.
Army roadblocks are turning back all but essential and military vehicles on the outskirts of Lice, where there is still little to eat or drink.
Troops strictly regulate the distribution of food supplies, but there are chaotic scrambles for loaves of bread.
Health officials are struggling to prevent the outbreak of disease .. chlorine-treated water is being brought in from outside areas and most of Lice's survivors have been vaccinated against cholera.
Many of the survivors have left Lice in search of food and accommodation. Of the town's original population of 8,000 it's believed only half are still in the area.
Rescue workers continue to find miraculous cases of survival amongst the debris. A 5-year-old girl was pulled from under a pile of rocks on Monday -- alive despite having been buried for two days.
But tons of unexplored rubble hold an unknown number of bodies. relief officials say it could be years before they are all recovered.
