- Story Text: Guerrillas fire 10 rockets at the headquarters of
the U.S.-led administration in Baghdad.
Guerrillas fired 10 rockets at the headquarters of
the U.S.-led administration in Baghdad on
Sunday (March 7, 2004) on the eve of the planned signing of an
interim constitution for Iraq.
Police said there were no casualties from the blasts.
The rockets were fired from a parked car and the attackers
fled,
police said, adding that they had also found explosives in
the car along with two rockets that had not been fired.
The rockets were aimed at buildings in the "Green
Zone", a heavily fortified area on the west bank of the
Tigris River that
used to be one of Saddam Hussein's palace complexes and is
now the main base of occupying forces in Iraq.
The explosions echoed across Baghdad, and warning
sirens sounded inside the Green Zone. The area has been
attacked by
rockets and mortars several times in recent months.
U.S.-led forces have been on high alert for possible
guerrilla attacks aimed at disrupting the signing of the
interim
constitution. The document was due to be signed on Monday
after several delays.
