- Story Text: Bob Geldof tells the French to travel to Edinburgh
after the Paris Live 8 concert.
Bob Geldof, the Irish organiser of the Live8 charity
concerts encouraged the French people to take part in the
"Long Walk to Justice" and to travel to Edinburgh in
Scotland after the Live8 concert in Paris on July 2, 2005.
Announcing the initial line-up for the French Live8
concert, to be held at the Palace of Versailles just
outside of Paris, at a news conference on Friday (June 17,
2005) in the French capital, Geldof stated:
"After the concert, come to the ports of Normandy and
Brittany. The English will sail in their private boats
across the Channel, and they will pick up the French people
in Cherbourg at the moment, at the moment, and they will
take them across to England, where the English landladies
in their bed and breakfast houses will offer them
hospitality at cost. And then they have to get up to
Edinburgh. And this new Dunkirk fleet will be led by Ellen
MacArthur."
Geldof illustrated the amount of money given to the
poor in Africa by Europe:
"600 million people in dire poverty. Every year Europe
gives the poorest people in Africa 65 cents each. Every cow
in Europe gets 848 euros. A human being, 65 centimes, an
animal, a surplus animal, 848 euros. We have a problem."
Geldof is hoping that one million people from all
around the globe will travel to Edinburgh following the
Live8 concerts. He is also hopeful that former South
African President Nelson Mandela will also be able to
travel to the Scottish capital to address the crowd
assembled there.
Around 200,000 people are expected to attend the French
leg of Live8, where the concert will feature French stars
including Yannick Noah and Axelle Red and international
artists such as Shakira, Placebo and Craig David. Tickets
for the event will be allocated by a text-message lottery
beginning on Monday (June 20, 2005).
Twenty years after the original Live Aid shows, Geldof
has co-ordinated 8 concerts on four continents to take
place on July 2, 2005. In addition to the main five
concerts to be held in London, Paris, Berlin and Rome in
Europe and in Philadelphia in the United States, Geldof officially
anno
unced during the news conference that
concerts will also take place in Toronto, Tokyo and
Johannesburg.
Geldof's aim is to raise awareness about African
hardship and poverty and to pressure the Group of Eight
leaders meeting in Scotland on July 6-8 to help tackle the
problem.
