- Story Text: Over 300 Peruvian waiters participated in the ninth
annual "Waiters' Race," in celebration of the International
Tourism Day.
Over 300 Peruvian waiters, carrying their service
trays with a drink, took part in a sprint through the streets
of Lima on Monday (September 27) to compete in a two kilometre
race for the speediest waiter award.
Men and women competitors carried one full glass and an
opened soft drink bottle as they ran for the title while fans
along the sidelines cheered them on through the 20 block
trajectory.
Waiters in the city of Lima have held the joyful
competition for nine years demonstrating their agility and
speed without spilling the contents of their tray.
This year's winner, a twenty-year old waiter from Lima's
Regatta Club, broke last year's record by reaching the finish
line in just 11 minutes and 46 seconds. The previous record
was set at 12 minutes and 50 seconds.
Johnny Noa Cardenas, who won the prize for $1000 U.S.
dollars and several consumer products donated by businesses
sponsoring the race, said it was the first time he had
participated in the race.
"I know this part of the city,...I did not know the
route," said Cardenas adding that it was an easy race and he
was not too tired.
The first waitress to complete the run finished in 15
minutes 30 seconds.
"I was a bit nervous trying to catch up with the others,
it was a hard race," said Consuelo Ocampo Falcon.
Another category within the race was the "masters" race
in which older waiters and waitresses participate. The winner
of that category was a sixty-six-year old man who said it was
his third year in the competition. The elderly runner said he
intends to run in the next two annual races, when he will be
sixty eight years old.
The race was originally organized in recognition of the men
and women who, through their work in the service industry, are
the first ones to come in contact with tourists visiting the
South American nation.
