Palestinians.
Tens of thousands of Indonesian Muslims protested in
Jakarta on Sunday (April 17) in support of Palestinians,
over Israel's plan for a Gaza withdrawal in July.
The protesters, mainly from the country's
Islam-oriented Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), also called
for a ban of right-wing Israelis from entering what Muslims
revere as
the al-Haram al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) in Jerusalem.
Known by Jews as the Temple Mount, the shrine is the
site of the al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third-holiest site.
Holding huge banners that read: "Save Al-Aqsa mosque
from raid of the Jewish", protesters marched through the
city's main street towards the U.S. Embassy.
"Who is the real owner of the land of Palestine? You
know and you understand the true history. And we also, even
the whole world knows that you play the role in Palestine.
You said that you are against terrorism. Let us define who
the real terroist is. Israel is an illegal migrant. Israel
is imperialist. Israel doesn't have the right over the
Palestinian territory. Israel terrorizes the civilian
people. Israel poisons the civilian people. Israel destroys
the houses of civilian people. Israel killed them. Israel
has built a new Berlin wall in
Palestine," said PKS Chairman Tifahtul Sembiring, as
followers chanted "America, Terrorist" outside the embassy.
Last week right wing Israelis had tried to march to the
shrine and mosque in Jerusalem's old city but were stopped
by Israeli police. The attempt sparked outrage in
Palestinian areas.
The site is sacred for Jews because they believe it is
where biblical King Solomon built a temple and where a
second temple was razed by the Romans in 70 A.D.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country,
does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
