- Story Text: A leading Indonesian artist has unveiled his latest
exhibition - a collection of ceramics celebrating the link
between mother and child.
Titled "Ibu and Anak" or "Mother and Child", artist F.
Widayanto's display of 32 ceramic pieces focuses exclusively
on the link between mother and child.
The 46-year-old artist, known as Yanto, says he was
inspired to create the images four years ago because of the
universality of the theme.
Yanto's main subjects initially centered on Javanese
women, creating sculptures showing the different stages in the
development of the relationship between mother and child.
He then took the idea further, freeing himself from the
conventional human form and using images derived from both
Javanese and Greek mythology.
Among them are the half-human, half-mermaid, half-deer
or half-snake creatures.
But all share one thing in common - an illustration of
the strong bond between mother and child.
"Ambung-ambungan" or "Kissing and Hugging" illustrates a
mother's first lesson of love and affection for her baby.
"Klekaran" or "Taking a nap" simply shows a baby
enjoying the comfort of childhood.
"I have to think of something else (about) the
relationship between the mother and her baby. So the
character, the expression between the mother and the son is
very important to me," said Yanto.
"It is not only how to carry (the baby) but also how to
teach, how to learn, how to be joyful. The relation, in a
different way," Yanto said.
"The basic idea is from Java. But later on the idea is
not coming from Java(nese) idea but can also from Western
(ideas), for example, the Satyr. But it is my duty to show, to
appear them in my way, in the Javanese sense. I think that is
more important." Yanto said.
Yanto's distinctive style incorporates elements from the
natural world.
The use of rattan, wood, bamboo and metal complements
the clay work and for art lovers, it's an unbeatable
combination.
"What I like is really the combination of the wood, the
ceramics, and everything. It is very traditional. This is
Indonesian art. This is what I like," said exhibit visitor
Tjie Tjin Siang.
For Yanto, the exhibit has proven to be a major success - at
the end of his 10-day exhibition, Yanto had sold almost
all of works, priced between 3,000-6,000 U.S. dollars each to
local art collectors.
