- Story Text: Most parts of the eastern German town of Dessau are
still flooded after a dam broke a day earlier, caused by a
flood wave which has caused death and destruction in central
Europe.
Leaking heating oil tanks on Tuesday (August 20)
threatened to contaminate the environment. Oil slicks were
seen in flooded streets of the Waldersee district of Dessau.
It was flooded a day earlier when despite the work of
hundreds of soldiers and volunteers who built walls of
sandbags, a nearby dam failed.
In one Dessau barn, pigs were standing neck deep in the
water.
But hopes grew on Tuesday that the worst of the floods may
be over in Germany.
The city of Magdeburg was spared flooding overnight and
according to the environment ministry for Lower Saxony in
northern Germany, dykes were expected to hold in the region.
After Magdeburg, there are no major cities along the Elbe
until Hamburg, which is not expected to flood.
The Elbe river rose less than expected and peaked at 6.70
metres in Magdeburg, 130 km (80 miles) west of Berlin, early
on Tuesday morning, a spokeswoman for the city's crisis centre
said adding that they were very pleased with how the dykes
held.
