- Story Text: King Hassan of Morocco on Tuesday (19 September) announced the launching of what he described as an "agrarian revolution" in his country. In a nation-wide television and radio broadcast, the King revealed plans to distribute 222,395 acres (90,000 hectares) among Morocco's peasant farmers.
Most of the land going to the peasants has been taken over from French settlers in Morocco. A further half-million acres still remains in the hands of French settlers, but King Hassan promises that once this has been reclaimed by the government, it too will be distributed to peasants. French farmers are resisting the move. They want to be able to sell the land to the Moroccans - then transfer the profit form the sale abroad. the subject has been discussed at senior level between the governments of France and Morocco.
