- Story Text: An estimated one million people have taken part in
Zurich's annual August street parade.
The annual street parade in the streets of the
Swiss city of Zurich was held in sweltering heat on
Saturday (August 9), with an estimated one million people
attending the event.
Good weather seemed to have answered the wishes of
parade organisers, who named this year's event "Let the Sun
Shine".
Temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees
Fahrenheit) were recorded in Zurich during the day.
A French-speaking woman was overwhelmed by the number
of people attending the parade, as well as their range in
age.
"This is superb, I have never seen so many people
gathered for a party. It is magnificent - young people, old
people, everyone is here," she said.
One man dressed in a white swimming costume who
described himself as "a lover" said he attended the parade
in the rain last year.
People spent the day enjoying themselves as they
danced to music blaring from loudspeakers through the
streets of the city, lounged on yachts in the lake and
plunged into its waters to cool down.
The parade is held annually in the second week of
August.
