- Story Text: A large crowd turned up at Kandy, central Sri Lanka, on Saturday (22 May) to take part in festivities marking the fourth anniversary of the country's Republic Day. Military bands provided the beat for thousands that marched through the streets.
President William Gopallawa and Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike took the salute from military contingents at a march past.
The Prime Minister later told the crowd that the people of Sri Lanka must all work harder for the nation "regardless of our differing views or personal predilections".
Leading members of the Government, military chiefs and buddhist monks were also among those who attended the celebrations.
One of the main attractions of a processing through the streets of Kandy was the tusker elephant from the Temple of Lord Buddha. The huge beast, flanked on either side by two other elephants, carried a copy of the Republican Constitution on its back.
