- Story Text: Many schools are forced to postpone the start of
classes in tsunami-devastated Aceh, as volunteers try to
fill in the gap.
With five teachers still missing and more than one
hundred students unaccounted for, a school in Indonesia's
ravaged town of Banda Aceh was forced to postpone the start
of classes on Monday (January 10, 2005).
Students and teachers instead held prayers and decided
to resume their studies the next day, hoping more of the
missing would attend.
"We want to start our classes as they were before,
because we want to lift the spirits of many of the students
who are still traumatised by the tsunami, as well as to
give motivation to the teachers themselves," said
Jamaluddin, headmaster of Darul Imarah High School.
Before the tsunami the school had 250 students and
fifteen teachers. It lost almost half of its student body
and a third of its teachers in the disaster.
Those who turned up on Monday were emotionally drained
from their traumatic experience, but at the same time
excited to return to their studies.
"After the tsunami we hope to be together here. The
students in all of Aceh want to resume their education, and
to do even better than before," said 16-year-old Rina.
With many children forced to live in refugee shelters
and with many schools destroyed by the Dec. 26 quake and tsunami, aid
organisations are trying to fill in the gap by
keeping children occupied with alternative educational
activities.
Koran recital and drawing classes were among the
favourite activities chosen by the displaced children.
"This is an alternative education to keep the spirit to
learn and to fight for life. We will try to bring some
consistency back into their lives by way of learning," said
Muslim Petroalexi, head of an Indonesian aid organisation.
