- Story Text: The 17th annual "Meeting of Friends" Athletics carnival was held in the Rastrello stadium in Siena, Italy, on Sunday (12 September). It was a day-long meeting and 127 athletes from the United States, Tanzania, Kenya, Australia, Hungary, Poland, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Italy took part. Although it was dominated by U.S. victories there were some excellent performances from the other competitors.
SYNOPSIS: The women's 100 metre sprint. And a win for Italian girl Angela Sclano in 12.20 seconds. Natalia Mtvejeva of the Soviet Union came in second in 12.33 seconds and Daniela Drinkova of Czenchoslovakia third in 12.42 seconds.
In the women's discus the girls from Eastern europe took the first three places. Jana Matysova of Czechoslovakia came third, throwing the disc 52.04 metres.
Hungarian competitor, Zsuzsa Nyitrai, was second. Her throw went 53.90 meters.
The winning performance came from Poland's Kristyna Nadolna with a distance of 55.54 metres.
The women's long jump. And a second place win or Tatiana Potapova of the Soviet Union who jumped 5.89 metres.
The winner was the Hungarian girl, Erdelyne Szabo, who easily carried off the event with a leap of 6.64 metres. Maddelena Bruni of Italy came third with a jump of 5.82 metres.
The men's 800 metre race saw a strong field vying for line honours. For Mike boit of Kenya it was another attack on the world record.
And as they came into the final lap Boit was ahead. He didn't break the record but went on the win in one minute 46.95. Carlo Grippo of Italy came in second in one minute 47.82 seconds and in third place was Hungary's Janos Hrenek in one minute 48.70 seconds.
