- Story Text: Rare, historic works of impressionist art are set
for auction in New York in early May.
Auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's are
exhibiting rare works of impressionist and modern art,
ahead of their New York auctions in early May.
At Christie's, the highlight of the auction is a
painting titled "Il grande metafisico" by Giorgio de
Chirico, which belonged to the Museum of Modern Art in New
York.
The painting is estimated to sell for $7,000,000
-10,000,000 (USD) and depicts one of Chirico's most
enduring and influential images. It was painted in Ferrara,
during Chirico's leave of absence from his military duties.
For Chirico, his "Great Metaphysician" was a figure
whose worldview transcends the one-dimensional stage
set-like world of external appearances.
Another important work that will go on auction in the
first week of May is Amedeo Modigliani's "Portrait de Roger
Dutilleul," which is estimated to fetch between $6,000,
000-9,000,000 million.(USD)
Roger Dutilleul was a passionate and renowned collector
of modern paintings during the early 20th century and one
of Modigliani's most important patrons.
Christopher Eykyn, head of Impressionists and Modern Art
department at Christie's explains the difference between
traditional and impressionist art.
"This is a sale of Impressionist and modern paintings,
so from an impressionists point of view, if you think about
the impressionists as having been artists that broke away
from the traditional school of painting, the salon style of painting, very highly detailed, precise paintings, coming
from the old master of tradition," Eykyn said on Friday
(April 30).
Other interesting paintings which will be auctioned at
Christie's on May 4th and 5th include Henri Matisse's
"Jeune fille blonde sur fond violet" which is estimated to
fetch between $4,000,000 - $6,000,000 (USD) and Joan Miro's
"Le Rouge, le bleu, le bel espoir," estimated at the same
price.
Across town, at Sotheby's auction house, one of the
highlight is Claude Monet's "Water Lilies," which is set to
earn between $9 to 12 million. (USD) It was painted when
Monet moved to Giverny, where he rented a house with a
large garden, which became the central theme of his art for
a period of time.
Another painting of note is Pablo Picasso's "Le
Sauvetage," which was painted in 1932, and is estimated to
fetch between $10/15 million. (USD)
This painting is the most highly developed treatment of
a theme which emerged from the artist's memories of the
summer he spent at the beach with his mistress, Marie
-Therese Walter, at Dinard in 1928.
The dramatic scene depicts a drowned woman being
rescued, inspired perhaps by an event in which Marie
Therese participated or reported to Picasso.
David Norman, co-chairman of Sotheby's Impressionist
and Modern Art explains the power of yet another Picasso,
"Nu Accroupi" that will highlight the May 6 auction.
Said Norman, "The crowning piece is a large nude
Picasso. It shows a massive crouching woman against a blue
background. It is so sculptural, even though it is painted
it's like he carved it out of a block of stone. The woman
is a gigantist, she is an amazon, she has such incredible
physical presence, it's really again one of the greatest
Picasso's we have ever had. So we have wonderful property,
all representing the best of the artist."
Other rare paintings at Sotheby's include "Golden
Afternoon" by Balthus, estimated to earn $4/6 million,
(USD) and "Les quatre rosaces aux motifs bleus" by Henri
Matisse, which could sell for $2/3.5 million. (USD)
Christie's impressionist and modern art auction takes
place on May 4 and 5, and Sotheby's will hold their auction
on May 6, 2004.
