- Story Text: Britain's Roy Jenkins on his first day as head of the European Common Market Commission on Thursday (6 January), made a plea for help for weaker member states so that the Common Market can achieve its goal of European union.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Jenkins is replacing outgoing President Francois-Xavier Ortoli of France. Of the 13 men in M. Ortoli's team, six -- including M. Ortoli himself -- will figure in Mr. Jenkins' new team.
Direct elections to a European parliament -- to which the commission will be accountable -- will take place during Mr. Jenkins' term of office. A major problem facing Mr. Jenkins is the community's common agricultural policy which is the biggest drain on the community's budget and beset with disputes among the nine member states. Mr. Jenkins gave a brief press statement before presiding over his first executive session outlining what he hopes to do in his period of office.
...committed to the principles of justice, of individual freedom of intellectual integrity and social fairness and this is the time even in the teeth of difficulties, which certainly exist, for a new and decisive advance."
