- Story Text: One man has died and another has been critically
injured as pro-Jakarta forces clashed with independence
supporters in East Timor's capital Dili, witnesses said.
Sunday's (May 9) clashes occurred in Dili's Mercado
Lama market
and are the latest in a series of clashes involving the two
sides ahead of a vote on independence on August 8.
Gunfire was heard and hospital sources said one man,
identified as 26-year-old Eugeneo Antonio Fatima, had died
with
a gunshot wound to his left eye.
Another man, a civil servant, remained in a critical
condition, with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
It was not clear who had shot the two men.
Witnesses said the incident broke out after a dispute over
gambling, a common Sunday pastime in the mainly Catholic
territory.
They said, however, that police on the scene fired warning
shots
to the air to disperse the feuding groups.
The two disputing groups first fought one another unarmed
but some later fought with machetes, a witness said.
Military and police officials were not immediately
available for comment.
Tension has increased in the former Portuguese colony
ahead
of the August vote.
Sunday's bloody incident occurred only a day after
thousands of pro-Jakarta militias staged a rally vowing for
peace and symbolically surrendering their arms.
The militiamen's earlier campaign of terror and
intimidation has led to the killing of dozens of
pro-independence supporters in the troubled territory.
The United Nations-brokered deal will allow East Timorese
to choose between independence and enhanced autonomy within
Indonesia in a U.N.-run ballot on August 8.
The U.N.unanimously endorsed the agreements on Friday
(May
7), stressing the responsibility of the Indonesian government
to maintain peace and security in the territory.
Dili has become a loyalist stronghold, with independence
leaders fleeing or in hiding and militias openly roaming the
streets without interference from soldiers or police.
But pro-independence groups have been emboldened by the
U.N.accord, under which a United Nations force including
unarmed police advisers will begin arriving soon to monitor
security and prepare for the ballot.
Several hundred foreign police officers are expected to
arrive in East Timor later this month, under the U.N.
agreements.Indonesia has agreed to their presence, but only
as advisors.
