- Story Text: The Royal Thai Volunteer Regiment received their Colours from King Bhumibol Adulyadej during ceremonies on Friday (5 May) to mark the 17th anniversary of his coronation. The 2,400-strong combat force is expected to leave shortly fro Vietnam.
King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit visited the Emerald Buddha Temple in Bangkok during the celebrations, where the King paid homage to his ancestors and invoked the blessing of the Triple Gems.
During the afternoon, the King presented the Colours to the Regiment - known as 'The Queen's Cobras'. The Colours were accepted by the commander, Colonel Sanan Yuthisarnprasit. The volunteers had been selected for the force in February, and since then had been undergoing special combat training from Thai army instructors and members of the U.S. Special Forces, at Cholburi.
The ceremony was watched by the Prime Minister, Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn, and the Commander of the Armed Forces, General Prapas Charusatien.
