Then the fishermen pick up the fish and take them to the cars. Then one has to supply with the rope to tie up the fish. For each bundle one has to pay a dime. So if one needs 1,000 bundles of fish one pays $500. Only with that amount one can leave with the bundles." 3.04 19. VARIOUS OF WOMEN WHO TIE THE FISH AND PUT THEM IN BUNDLES (4 SHOTS) 3.22 20. - Story Text: Heavy rains have caused an abundance of fish in
Colombia's Magdalena river giving the local fishing industry a
boost.
For the first time in six years, fishermen who work on
the waters of the Magdalena River, located in Honda de Tolima
(140 kilometres southwest of Bogota city), have experienced an
economic boost thanks to an incredible abundance of fish.
This year heavy rains caused many of the hydroelectric
plants located along the river to let more water flow and
thus, more fish to be available.
Between December 1999 and the beginning of February 2000,
fishermen have captured 1,300 tons of "bocachico" (a type of
fish) compared to last year's 720 tons.
Fishermen have also fished other types of fish never seen
before in such abundance such as "bagre", "blanquillo",
"barbudo", "doncella" and other species.
Many have been benefited by the great abundance, but
others have been intimidated by the competition.
"This has been great. But a price for fish has not been
set.For that reason, we will give it for free here or at the
square or at the port.Since there are so much fish, there is
great competition so one ends up filling up a whole canoe and
selling it for only $15 or $20 dollars," said Bernardo
Santivanez, a fisherman.
The abundance of fish is expected to last for four to five
days.
