- Story Text: Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi said today (Wednesday 1 Sept) that the Federation of Arab Republics was a new force for the Arab revolution.
"With the establishment of the Federation we shall advance the day of the promised victory", he added in a speech at the start of a military parade in Tripoli, the highlight of three days celebration of the second anniversary of the revolution which toppled the monarchy in Libya.
Today is also the day that Libyans, Egyptians and Syrians vote on the constitution of the proposed federation of their three countries.
The Libyan leader saluted Sudanese President Jaafar el-Nimeiry and other African leaders and delegations who had arrived for the celebrations, and said that Sudan would join the Federation in a few months.
This film, shot by Visnews cameraman Ken Ludlow, was injected by French Television (ORTF) over the Eurovision link and was telerecorded by Visnews in London.
SYNOPSIS: Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi on Wednesday called the Federation of Arab Republics -- which embraces his country, Egypt and Syria -- a new force for the Arab revolution. He was speaking in Tripoli before a military parade which was the highlight of three days celebrations of the second anniversary of the revolution which toppled the monarchy in Libya.
Colonel Gaddafi went on to say that the Federation would make the whole world reconsider its attitude to the Arab nation. He added that there was no place in the Federation for those who fought only with slogans. "Those who stand far from the battlefield have no place in the Federation of Arab Republics", he said.
The Libyan leader saluted Sudanese President Jaafar El-Nimeiry and other African leaders and delegations who had arrived for the celebrations, and said that Sudan would join in the federation in a few months.
Wednesday's military parade, watched by thousands of cheering Libyans, took place at the same time Egyptians and Syrians were voting on whether to join the Federation of Arab Republics linking both countries with Libya. Colonel Gaddafi took the salute at the military parade -- the biggest ever staged in the country.
