- Story Text: The Balmain collection has been unveiled in Paris.
Balmain's designer, Oscar de la Renta, unveiled the 1998/1999 autumn collection at the Arts Museum on Wednesday (July 22).
It was a pale collection based on the 19th century style of St Petersburg. However the lavish clothes seemed to include Chinese influences as well.
The Russian effect was evident in embroidered tunics with a hint of military style: Ermine-edged velvet knee-pants, small fitted jackets over long skirts in pretty twilight blue bouclette and long flared coats with rows of buttons at the cuff.
The old revolutionary Chinese style came in the shape of skinny Mao-collared velvet collums and Chinoiserie brocade jackets worn over narrow skirts.
De la Renta appeared to have only just discovered the grand taffeta ballgown open over narrow pencil trousers.
But to compensate for such catwalk classic there were a few gems: an aqua faille dancing dress with romantic bouquets tumbling down its spreading skirts.Or a slim sheath in coffee cream lurex tweed. And finally, a Catherine the Great gown of bronze taffeta with swirling gold tulips and arabesques.
