- Story Text: INTRO: Italy's Gianni Versace presented a very young Spring-Summer haute couture collection in Paris on Saturday (January 18). Among the guests at the show were British pop star Elton John, well known for his flamboyant taste in clothes, and choreographer Maurice Bejart.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Versace targetted a younger clientele, layering translucent, close-to-the-body chiffon slip dresses in lavender, absinthe, lime and peach florals or motifs inspired by the works of artist Alexander Calder.
"I went in search of lightness," explained Versace in the programme. Everything that seems weightless, which challenges gravity, fascinates me." Elton John said he liked Versace because the designer believed in himself and was not afraid to take chances.
For evening, the chiffon was brushed with gold arabesques on an abstract mix of colours -- pea-green with parma, absinthe and coffee cream, while hemlines fell to the ankles and necklines dipped to the buttocks.
Strapless day dresses in quiet navy or lipstick red hugged the body, their slanted hemlines rippling with flamenco-style pleated ruffles.
The Spanish hemline, a constant theme throughout, returned on narrow black skirts paired with ivy-embroidered wool cardigans or on stunning, slinky sheaths in black or ultra-marine blue.
"He took a lot of new directions. It was very interesting in terms of the colours, the new impressions, and the transparencies," said Nicole Fischelis of Saks Fifth Avenue.
