- Story Text: In Colombia, all 42 people (36 passengers and six crew) on board a Colombian airliner were killed when it crashed into a mountainside in heavy mist on Monday (August 27, 1973). The four-engined lockhead Electra turbo-prop crashed only seven minutes after take-off from Bogota's Eldorado international airport. It hit the "El Cable" mountain about 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) above sea level and burst into flames. The aircraft was totally destroyed and bodies were scattered over an area of about 1,000 square yards (metres). Airport sources said the plane should have turned before reaching the mountain.
The aircraft which was owned by the Aerocondor Airlines, was to have called at the Colombian Caribbean ports of Cartagena and Barranquilla and the isle of San Andres, on route to Curscao.
Recovery work was hampered by drizzle, mist and the steep terrain. The Colombian authorities and the airline have begun an investigation into the cause of the crash.
This was Colombia's second air accident in a week. On August 22nd, an Avianca Airline plane crashed in the east of the country, killing three and seriously injuring fourteen.
