- Story Text: On Friday (11 January). shortly before the second anniversary of his rise to power, on January 13, Ghanaian Head of State and Chairman of the National Redemption Council, Colonel I.K. Acheampong, held a press conference in Accra to review the economic situation in the country.
Colonel Acheampong said the Government was aware of the world-wide rise in commodity prices as a result of the oil crisis, and therefore would concentrate its efforts on "Operation Feed Yourself" -- a programme to make Ghana a self-sufficient food producer.
At the press conference, the Ghanian leader -- flanked by members of his military Government -- also announced a proposed wage increase for Ghanaian workers that would range between two-and-a-half and three-and-a-half per cent.
In a dramatic political move, Colonel Acheampong announced that civilians would have palace in three new governmental bodies to be established. The move many be an attempt to quiet opposition from politicians to this military rule, But, Colonel Acheampong explained that the Ghana Armed Forces would not want to hand over power to politicians only to have them return to power. He said the country needed the stability only afforded by military rule.
