- Story Text: Colonel Muammar Gaddafi the Libyan leader, paid tribute to Gamal Abdel Nasser on Friday (9 February) when he attended a prayer service at the former Egyptian President's Mosque in Cairo. Egypt's present leader, President Anwar Sadat accompanied Colonel Gaddafi to the service.
On Thursday (8 February) Colonel Gaddafi called for a strengthening of Arab unity when he spoke to members of the Arab Socialist Union.
During his address he said the principles of the late President Nasser were "landmarks in the history of the Arab nation's struggle." He added that the Arab nations should respect Nasserism and learn lessons from his principles.
During his stay in Cairo, Colonel Gaddafi also visited the family of the late President.
The Libyan leader had been in the Egyptian capital for several days for talks with President Sadat and Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad on political and military strategy in the Middle East crisis.
SYNOPSIS: The Nasser Mosque in the Egyptian capital of Cairo was visited by Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi on Friday.
Colonel Gaddafi was accompanied to a prayer service in the Mosque by President Anwar Sadat. The Libyan leader had addressed the Arab Socialist Union the previous day calling for a strengthening of Arab Unity. He said that the principles of the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser were landmarks in the history of the Arab nation's struggle. He added that the Arab nations should respect Nasserism and learn lessons from his principles.
Earlier in the day, Colonel Gaddafi had visited the wife and family of the late Egyptian leader.
