- Story Text: A private collection of 122 etchings by the 17th century Dutch master Rembrandt is being put up for sale on Thursday (September 28) at Sotheby's auction house.
The etchings rival those held by the British Museum or Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum.
"In this collection the quality is consistently high, and indeed a good number of the prints are probably the best examples in existence, found even in the oldest museums in Europe and the States", said Richard Godfrey, Director of Sotheby's Old Master Prints department in London.
The prints form part of a multi-million guilder art collection built up over 20 years by Dutch businessman Joost Ritman, whose disposable cutlery business De Ster went bankrupt under the weight of his fine art purchases.
"We are trying to preserve the collection intact because we think it is got such variety and breadth and there are very few great collections of Rembrandt Prints really left in private collections any more", Godfrey told Reuters Television.
Sotheby's expect considerable interest for the prints which span Rembrandt's career from 1620 to 1660 and it put a value of 20 million US dollars on the collection.
Hightlights of the collection represents a wide range of subjects as landscapes, nudes, portraits and biblical scenes, but the masterpiece of the exhibition is the famous impression of "Christ Shown to the People" (1655). "For something like this I stand a hundred per cent that he (Rembrandt) must have printed this himself because it required so much skill and so much artistic savoir affaire that it is hard to imagine that anyone but him could have printed it", said Dr. Nancy Bialler, Head of Sotheby's Old Master Prints department in New York.
The etchings will remain on view in The Hague until October 3 and will then move on to London and New York.
