- Story Text: During nearly two centuries, the Ghent Florialia in Belgium has built up a reputation as Europe's most vivid indoor flower show. But it's a rare event. The explosion of colour in the city's Grand-Palace takes place only once every five years.
That's tradition that goes back to the first Florialia held in 1807. Part of that same tradition is the immense scale of the exhibition, with a vast variety of plants and an equally impressive following from flower enthusiasts.
This year, by the time the show closes on May 5, about a million visitors are expected. Top plant growers and showmen from around the world have combined their talents in presenting the display.
With this international participation, the millions of blooms and plants range around the world from Australian tree ferns to African violets. The Florialia also gives visitors an opportunity to see new strains of plants introduced since the last show in 1970.
