- Story Text: Thirty three bodies from the midair collision between
a Bashkirian Airlines Tupolev 154 and a DHL Boeing 757 cargo
plane earlier this week, have left Friedrichshafen airport
bound for Russia.
German officials returned 33 of the recovered bodies
to Russia on Sunday night (July 7) . Investigators have so far
identified 37 of the victims. The final two bodies were also
recovered on Sunday.
Recovery teams worked across a wide area to find victims'
remains after Monday night's (July 1) mid-air collision over
southern Germany last week killing 71 people, including 52
Russian children. The majority of the wreckage from the
collision has been recovered and taken to a hangar at
Friedrichshafen airport, where an examination by experts will
begin. However, the teams were still searching for body
parts.
As the investigation continued, Der Spiegel magazine
reported that German aviation officials had tried to alert
Swiss air traffic controllers to the impending collision, but
could not get through because the Swiss phones were
malfunctioning.
The two planes were flying at an altitude of 12,000 metres
(39,000 feet) above Ueberlingen on the northwest end of Lake
Constance when they collided.
There were 69 Russians on board the seven-year-old
Tupolev. The DHL pilots were a Briton and a Canadian.
The 33 bodies were transported from the town of
Ueberlingen to Friedrichshafen airport where they were taken
aboard a waiting Russian cargo plane for the flight home.
German investigators continue to analyse the flight
recorders from two jets. The recorders, known as the black
boxes, could help determine the cause of the collision.
