- Story Text: Three new additions to Ghana's Tema Food Complex were opened on Friday (9 November). Colonel I.K. Acheampong, Chairman of Ghana's National Redemption Council, performed the ribbon cutting ceremony, in the presence of government and factory officials, and representatives of the overseas companies who had assisted in the construction of the additions to the complex.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, Colonel Acheampong caped that the complex, of five factories, would soon reach full production. He said he was gratified that the Tema Food Complex Corporation had been able to construct the three new sections, the fish cannery, the fish meal plant and the vegetable oil mill, within a period of seventeen months. He also hoped that the final stages of the complex (a tin can factory, an oil refinery and a margarine plant) would be completed to the end of 1974.
The Tema Food Complex was a legacy of the Nkrumah government. The National Redemption Council found a large number of uncompleted. and sometimes abandoned, industrial projects in Ghana when it came to power, including Tema. The Council found the Tema Complex potentially viable, with the ability of supplying important basic needs to the country, and decided to continue the project.
Several West European companies have been instrumental in building the new additions to the Complex. The West German firms of Lubeca and Krupp have been involved in the construction of the fish cannery and the tin can factory respectively, Messrs. Escher Weiss of Switzerland have assisted in the building of the Cold Store, due to be opened in December, and the Danish firm Altlas, in the fish meal plant. Another West German company, Lurgi, are still involved in the technical appraisal of the oil refinery and the margarine plant.
The opening of these new factories in the Tema Food Complex is seen as a major move in the effort to make Ghana economically self-sufficient.
SYNOPSIS: Three new additions to the Tema Food Complex were opened on Friday by the Chairman of Ghana's National Redemption Council, Colonel I.K. Acheampong. The new additions -- a fish cannery, a fish meal plant, and a vegetable oil mill -- were completed within a seventeen-month period.
West German, Swiss and Danish companies have been involved in the construction of the new factories. Further additions to the complex, in Ghana's major port, should be constructed by the end of 1974, when it should be completed.
The Tema Food Complex is seen as an important step towards Ghana becoming economically self-sufficient. It will, according to Colonel Acheampong, provide important basic needs for the country.
When the Ghanaian Army took power in 1966, it inherited from the Nkrumah government a legacy of unfinished, and abandoned, industrial projects. The Tema complex was one such project. However, it was found to be potentially viable, and the National Redemption Council proceeded to complete it. Colonel Acheampong urged workers on Friday to achieve full production at Tema as soon as possible.
