- Story Text: Head of the Strasbourg-based Eurocorps prepares for
deployment to Afghanistan.
The head of the Strasbourg-based Eurocorps has
called the security situation in Afghanistan as "not too
bad" ahaed of his units deployment to Afghanistan later
this month and predicted "the same level of terrorism for
the future".
Lt. Gen. Jean-Louis Py, whose unit will take over
responsibility of the NATO-led International Security
Assistance Force (ISAF), told reporters at Cologne airport
on Friday (August 6) that "everybody was talking about the
spring offensive of the Taliban".
"Well, we did not see this spring offensive", Py said.
"We saw individual, but not coordinated attacks in
Afghanistan on soft targets mainly. What could happen in
the future is an increased risk because of the elections."
Py said "the aim of the mission is to support the

Eurocorps is a European Union army consisting of 60,000
soldiers from Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and Spain
which began work in 1993. The corps is headed by French
lieutenant general Jean-Louis Py.
