- Story Text: The contrasting collections of Fake London and Justin
Oh have brought London Fashion Week to a close.
British design label Fake London showed a trademark
over-the-top Spring/Summer collection on Monday
(September 16, 2002), dripping with ironic, hedonistic
touches.
Corset tops and tiny pleated skirts and kilts were the key
shapes, teamed with fitted blazers or "parka" jackets. The
label's trademark applique was everywhere, on tops, trousers
and jackets. Linen, cotton and fine wool were used in shades
of hot pink and orange and pale blues and greens.
It was a witty collection, drawing on ideas of posh
college girls having fun. Models wore tiny backpacks, only big
enough to carry in miniature bottle of champagne, and
champagne corks and bottle openers served as jewellery. But
designer Desiree Mejer peppered the collection with some very
wearable, saleable pieces -- wide linen trousers in shades of
pale pink or biscuit and fitted blazers -- which were not only
for the very young.
Spanish born Desiree Mejer started the Fake London label
in 1992, making patchwork sweaters and T-shirts. She is known
for her street style, and is popular among pop singers and
Britpack actors.
By contrast, Justin Oh showed a simple, classic
Spring/Summer collection.
Colours were muted creams and pale pastels, with hints of
red and navy. Fabrics were heavy cotton, linen and chiffon.
There was a strong Oriental feel to the collection, with
wrapped kimono-style tops and dresses, and a key shape was the
gathered knee-length skirt worn with layers of petticoats.
Malaysian-born Oh worked for Yohji Yamamoto in Tokyo
before setting up his own business seven years ago.
