- Story Text: Colombia's flower industry gears up for Valentines
Day.
Colombia's flourishing rose industry has been
working overtime for their most important event of the
year, Valentine's Day.
The largest producer of cut flowers after Holland,
Colombia has exported more than one million boxes of roses
for February 14, mostly to the United States.
"In terms of volume, we are talking about somewhere
around twelve, fourteen per cent of our total production
that we are moving for this date." said Augusto Solano,
President of the Colombian Flower Association. "Annually,
we export some eleven, twelve million boxes, this time its
more than a million boxes that we are exporting for
Valentine's Day."
The flower industry generates more than 160,000 jobs in
Colombia, sixty five per cent of these positions go to
women, who are thought to handle flowers with more delicacy
and precision than men.
"I felt the need to design beautiful things that people
could appreciate," said Adriana Satizabal, a flower
arranger. "Not the typical arrangement. I think we need to
leave behind the typical and surprise, excite people that
are getting flowers."
Colombia expects to receive more than 700 million
dollars from its flower exports in 2004.
