- Story Text: Representatives from 30 countries have arrived in San
Vicente del Caguan as observers for the latest round of peace
talks between leftist rebels and the Colombian government.
Some 30 ambassadors from Europe and Latin America,
arrived in the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia's (FARC)
strong-hold of San Vicente del Caguan on Wednesday (March 07)
to act as observers for scheduled meetings between the rebels
and government peace negotiators.
The 17,000 strong FARC, Latin America's oldest and most
powerful rebel army invited several countries including the
United States, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Chile to
join the European Union, the Vatican, and the United Nations
as observers in peace negotiations to end a war that has
killed more than 35,000 civilians since 1990.
The United States declined the invitation, but most of the
other countries will be present at the start of the talks on
Thursday (March 08).
In February, Colombian President Andres Pastrana and FARC
leader Manuel "Sureshot" Marulanda agreed to resume peace
talks, ending a tense three-month standoff. The Colombian
people, exhausted with years of failed talks, have little
confidence in the peace process.
