- Story Text: A jazz concert at the Colosseum in Rome marked the
closing of a day of memorials in Italy for the victims of the
last year's September 11 attacks on the United States.
The jazz concert on Wednesday night (September 11) was
organised by the mayor of the city of Rome, Walter Veltroni,
who told the audience that the American musical theme lent itself
to the commemoration of the anniversary.
A number of well-known jazz musicians including Enrico
Rava, Paolo Fresu and Roberto Gatto performed their own
versions of Broadway favourites from West Side Story and a
number of the jazz greats including Miles Davis.
The concert brought to a close the days events which, as
in cities across the globe, included memorial ceremonies in
embassies and churchs, where prayers were said for those who
lost their lives at the World Trade Center (WTC), The Pentagon
or over Pennsylvania.
Earlier the tenor Andrea Bocelli sang Ave Maria at the
U.S. Ambassadors residence in the Italian capital as he had
done at Ground Zero in New York at another memorial serice at
the end of last year.
The musicians played under the watchful eye of the Italian
police who increased their presence across Italy on the
anniversary of the attacks.
The concert featured link-ups with musicians in New York,
Paris and Milan as well as a segment from Afghanistan.
