- Story Text: Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini says Italy is worried about potential civil war in Libya.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, on a visit to Cairo, said on Tuesday (February 22) that Italy was concerned about a potential civil war in Libya and emphasised his country's role in re-building Egypt and providing aid for the entire region.
Following a meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa, Frattini discussed the possibilities of an economic plan aimed at kick-starting the region's economy.
"I put forth a plan for a project directed towards the Mediterranean region that has the foundations of the Marshall Plan, aimed at re-starting the region's economy," Frattini told a joint news conference with Moussa.
"We are also very concerned with the imminent danger that could lead to a civil war in Libya. This could have a negative effect as the number of civilians immigrating to Europe will be very high," he added.
Moussa condemned the violence in Libya and said it would not stop the spreading change in the Arab world.
"We are urging an end to the violence and the treatment of citizens in a different way. We are currently in times of great change in the Arab world. These violent procedures will not put a stop on this change," he said.
The secretary-general said he scheduled a meeting of the council of the Arab League for later on Tuesday to search for a solution to the current crisis in the Arab world. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
